Washington DC Condominium Renovation

The renovation of this condominium at a distinguished Washington, DC address touched nearly every room, and transformed the dated unit into a classic, elegant residence. BOWA, the design build contractor, applied the specialized methodologies it has developed as an expert in condominium remodeling to this early twentieth-century building. Working closely with the homeowner, a busy local interior designer, the contractor was able to restore the timeless elements of the original construction while adding the comforts and convenient features of modern living.

In an effort to increase usable space and improve flow, the master bathroom was completely reconfigured and other areas were redesigned. The reconfiguration posed several challenges as it involved extensive demolition of the traditional plaster, terra cotta and masonry work typical of pre-war construction. The project also entailed rerouting utilities, such as all new electric wiring that had to be channeled through the plaster, and installing a new gas line in order to retrofit the beautiful wood burning fireplace with gas logs. Custom panel molding was painstakingly matched to existing moldings. The original interior doors, unique to this building, were saved during the demolition and repurposed in different areas of the remodeled home. Given BOWA’s expertise in historic preservation, the results were stunning.

Special care was taken to maximize every square inch of livable space. Thoughtfully designed, custom- built shelves and cabinets flank the walls and provide extensive storage in the bedrooms and study, as well as conceal and organize audio-visual equipment in the family room. The newly renovated master suite includes a spa-like bathroom and a spacious dressing area meticulously designed to include closet, storage and display areas.

After years of living in a larger suburban home, the well executed condo renovation has allowed this DC family to enjoy all the comforts and conveniences of home while reveling in the accessibility of their city space.
