Energy Wise Craftsman Remodel
The existing 400 square foot house on this hillside lot was formerly an accessory structure to the main residence next door. Both structures shared a common driveway. Upon splitting the lot, the owner sought to enlarge and convert the accessory structure into a small new single family residence for her own use. She was particularly fond of the traditional Craftsman aesthetic, but also sought a home that was energy wise while also taking full advantage of the magnificent ocean and island views that the site enjoys. Other than the foundation system and floor framing, little of the original house remains. The new design utilizes both passive and active solar collection systems for heating and electricity. It also incorporates a passive ventilation system that takes advantage of the cool westerly breezes to cool the house in summer. This is made possible by the high clerestory windows through which internal heat is released.
