Laurel Canyon Residence

Perched on a 1.75-acre promontory in Laurel Canyon, this 6,400 square foot residence commands sweeping views of Mulholland Drive and the surrounding canyons. Designed as a contemporary homage to the traditional courtyard house, the architecture draws deeply from the owner’s Moroccan heritage and childhood memories, blending cultural nostalgia with modern minimalism. Built in the Hollywood on an existing flat pad to preserve the natural terrain, the two-story stucco structure steps down gently via terraces on all sides, softening its presence within the rugged landscape.

The home’s exterior unfolds through a restrained palette of gravel, stone, and wild meadow grasses, evoking the arid elegance of North African design. A procession of olive trees guides visitors from the entrance forecourt through tall oversized doors into a sunlit gravel courtyard...a private oasis open to the sky. From this central courtyard, sight lines extend through the home’s entry and living room to the untamed meadow at the rear, creating a dialogue between curated and wild spaces.

Terraces, balconies and porches cascade across the façade, weaving indoor and outdoor realms while offering panoramic canyon vistas. Over 150 strategically planted trees, including native oaks, envelop the property, creating a verdant buffer from Woodstock Road below and enhancing the site’s secluded, untouched character. Below ground, a fully subterranean basement houses a wine cellar, screening room, gym and screening room, spaces designed for leisure,

This residence harmonizes Moroccan-inspired intimacy with Laurel Canyon’s untamed spirit, crafting a sanctuary where heritage and horizon converge.
