The owners of this kitchen were looking to update and brighten the space without the hassle and expense of a full tear out. The existing cabinetry was in excellent shape, but the traditional finishes and island configuration left a lot to be desired. The island itself was an awkward “angular” configuration that essentially confined the kitchen layout and created a barrier to the adjacent living room. The remedy for this was to incorporate a completely new island as the centerpiece of the kitchen and update the perimeter to reflect a fresh new style. The new island configuration would become more linear, increasing the overall flow, while bringing the kitchen and living room together. The functionality of the island would also change by incorporating a large single bowl sink, a steamer, and a more ideal placement of the trash pullouts and dishwasher. The most unique highlight of the space was a solid walnut raised top with a waterfall edge, marrying the contemporary new finishes with the more traditional tones of stained hardwood floors. In the end, a few aesthetic upgrades completely transformed this dark, traditional kitchen into a modern marvel without breaking the bank!
