Robinson Woods Kitchen

This had to have been the most difficult 2’ bump out in the history of kitchen remodeling. This four time client thought they were near the end of a 4 year run of remodeling their mid-century modern home, until they noticed the clutter in the most important room of the house. Although nice, this kitchen was lacking the necessary space and functionality to accommodate their larger, multi-generational family living under one roof. The existing space felt confined and storage was very inefficient. The placement of the kitchen was near the front of the home, situated in a high traffic area, leading to many rooms throughout the house. It was nearly impossible to prepare meals without multiple people bumping into one another on any given day. Something needed to be done, but the depth of the space and inability to capture space from adjoining rooms presented a limited set of options. After much debate and exhausting all other possibilities, the decision was made to expand the space by two feet, turning this kitchen remodel into a kitchen addition. However, this presented a unique set of challenges, both structurally and aesthetically. During the design process, we were able to reconfigure the entire kitchen and develop a plan that solved many of the family’s pressing issues. Lack of flow in a high traffic area, clutter and inefficient storage, poor natural light, and clashing material styles. The additional two feet and the removal of several clunky closets provided much needed depth to free up the traffic flow. A highly efficient and thoughtful custom cabinetry plan eliminated the clutter, while increasing storage capacity. Incorporating new windows with maximum window coverage brought in an abundance of natural light. And finally, a fresh new, modern aesthetic transformed the existing space into a cohesive marriage with the rest of the mid-century modern home. However, an effective design is one thing, but flawless execution was another. Not to mention the challenge of making the exterior look as if it was always meant to be.
