Cory-Merrill Basement Remodel

With their third child due to arrive soon, these homeowners needed to update their basement to add more space for their kids and themselves. The basement was dated, with an inefficient layout of compartmentalized rooms, an exposed radiator pipe at ceiling height and a built in bench with minimal natural light exposure. This was the third project I have worked on with these clients (a kitchen remodel and a second story addition), and although the scope was small, and the budget was smaller, we made some minimal changes to open the space, and create functional storage and a great place for the kids. By removing the walls between the storage room and power room, and opening up the staircase to these rooms, it created a more open feel without raising the ceiling and removing the pipe. We added a new egress window to allow in more natural light, new paint and carpet, reoriented the furniture in the room, and created new built-ins above the foundation wall with access to storage in the crawl space. We also capitalized on a disorganized storage room, and installed new laminate plank flooring to create a kids nook for arts and crafts and toy storage. Now this space is loved by both kids and adults alike.
