Modern Oceanside Retreat
Our client was building a new, low-carbon home; while allowing for an aging-in-place plan. They wanted a very comfortable, highly stylized, contemporary space that felt comfortable for everyday living, but was impressive enough for entertaining guests. Our client wanted the interiors to reflect the beach location, but in a sophisticated, luxurious contemporary style. The client required us to provide all decorative lighting, furnishings (indoor and outdoor), rugs & window treatments. All furniture fabrics needed to be super durable & cleanable to withstand use from guests coming in from the pool or returning from the beach, etc. so natural fabrics and many stain/fade resistant options were selected. Backsplashes in all bathrooms and the kitchen were recessed into the walls and aligned with the face of the plaster walls for a more seamless look. Wood paneled walls warmed up an otherwise stark, white plaster wall experience and made the spaces feel more luxurious; “floating, monolith walls provided the necessary partial separation of living spaces instead of having a truly open concept space. We allowed for a hidden screen for the TV to pocket into the LR ceiling, keeping the focus on the exterior views and the interior artwork instead of the black screen on the wall. Bold colors dominate but don’t overpower the living spaces and Master Bedroom, but the guest spaces remained relatively calm. Limited decorative lighting, except at the dining table and the kitchen island (wavy hand-blown glass globes reminiscent of the ocean and a flat, boxed “skylight” pendant, respectively) so that artwork light fixtures (directional recesses and monopoints) could steer one’s focus toward the artwork and sculpture.
