Basement InLaw Apartment

Merged family living is on the rise with one of the largest generations in the USA, Baby Boomers are aging and still active. This generation ranges between the ages of 59 to 77 and it is estimated that in 2023 there are 71 million living in the US. Their spending power is around $2.6 trillion and fifty-six percent of this group of people still support their children. Lastly, 10,000 Boomers reach retirement each day which means they are planning for their leisure years. So, why all the stats? Many home remodeling projects are being contracted by this generation. They are adding onto their homes and moving into the additions allowing their children’s families to occupy the family home. Some are buying homes along with their married children to help with the expenses and moving into basement in-law apartments.

In this post, we will share a bright, beautiful basement inlaw apartment now occupied by Boomers located in one of their children’s homes stationed there to help with the care of the grandchildren. Also, the living arrangement allows them to enjoy a carefree life of travel without the responsibility of home upkeep. Many like the couple who live in this apartment have secondary homes that they can enjoy whenever they choose to get away.

This home had already experienced a remodel some time ago to incorporate an in-law apartment in the basement. Everything was dated and did not live up to the desired style of our homeowners. An interior design plan was created by Home Interiors By Design to create a bright and beautiful living space for the grandparents to occupy. Though incorporated into their children’s home they have a separate entrance and all the amenities of an upscale apartment. This couple even enjoys an outdoor living space in which to view the lushly landscaped backyard.

Choosing to create an open floor plan offering plenty of room for entertaining. The many windows bring an abundance of natural light dispelling the usual dark and dank basement atmosphere. The kitchen, living room, and dining area are incorporated into an open-concept design but separated strategically to give the look and feel of three separate living areas. This couple also has a separate study for quiet contemplation or a home office. So many amenities such as a roomy pantry, laundry room, gas fireplace, and guest bedroom.

Since this basement has a plentiful 2100 square feet the apartment dwellers have a separate and privately located bedroom en suite. The en suite includes a large bedroom with a sitting area, a bathroom with double vanity, a makeup area, and a large floor-to-ceiling tiled walk-in shower.

A guest bed and bath are available for visiting family and friends on the opposite side of the apartment. The study or home office is in this same area giving guests the ability to have a separate living space. Not too many in-law apartments offer such amenities especially when located in a basement. Nothing about this apartment speaks to being in a basement and gives the couple a pleasant place in which to enjoy retirement.

Most apartment dwellers would love to enjoy this basement apartment. The family has the opportunity to share life together helping one another and yet they can retire to their own beautiful separate spaces. Retired parents can help their children raise their families and the children can be there for the parents as they age. It is a win-win for all involved and we can help you enjoy this same opportunity to share life with your family.
