Mid Century Modern Renovation
Renovation for Functionality
The homeowners chose this Mid-Century Modern renovation to update and create functionality in a 1970s-built home. They love the mid-century style of the house but wanted changes to fit their family’s needs. The front entry, primary bedroom suite, bath, and closet were remodeled. Also, the hall bath, laundry, and powder room were updated. The entire first-floor flooring was replaced, as was the main staircase.
The primary suite bathroom was designed for aging in place and included a walk-in accessible shower. The primary and hall baths were shifted from the original layout, and wall-hung toilets were installed to give a more modern look. These layout changes were challenging, as was repurposing a bedroom to create a laundry room.
Mid-Century Modern Style
First impressions are essential; this client wanted to create a new entry and staircase. The changes required some flooring changes as the floor was not level, and a structural wall had been moved previously without consideration of a proper load transfer bearing. We had to address the differences in floor elevations and include multiple support beams and posts to rectify further sagging. The joys of remodeling!
The Beauty of Design and Build
The design and construction team worked together to create new spaces for the homeowners. As the layouts of various rooms were changed, issues arose. One such thing was the kitchen being built over a garage floor, which gave the room a continual chill in the Maryland winter months. We decided to spray foam insulation and install heating under the new tile to make a more comfortable space. Original cabinets were reused, and new ones were added for more storage space.
The new design plan included extensive lighting, relocated windows, and added some new ones. The designer and contractor worked together to solve the various problems encountered, all while the homeowners lived in the home. The result is a stunning, functional, mid-century modern home they can enjoy for years.
