Old Becomes New Again
A historical Spanish-style house became our clients' new home in Santa Barbara's Riviera neighborhood. The long, narrow front yard was split by both shady & full sun exposures. A tired lawn was on its way out to be replaced by drifts of sages, lavender, calendula catmint, lamb's ear, & wooly thyme. Random dislodged natural rock was to be re-stacked but kept as a continuous terraced wall. I was asked to design a naturalistic 'wild' garden of drought-tolerant plants. Once designed, this entry path & garden continued to unfold organically as the existing old roses on the back side of the property began blooming in spring showing their colors, and one by one, we were asked to incorporate them into our design plan. The process of blending the roses with the sun-loving plants was both fun and challenging. Additionally, we worked to create a seamless transition from the new plants with full sun exposure to the shade-loving & more traditional camellias & azaleas that graced the long, shady length of the home. Grasses and a few of our shade-tolerant plants in the palette worked wonders.
