There was some head-scratching before we figured out how to convert an unused pantry and a full bath into a shower room flanked by two powder rooms that could accommodate two boys and one girl who might need to utilize the space at the same time.

Once we figured out the space plan, we moved onto the fun part of selecting the Spanish-style finishes such as a black terra cotta floor in a star-and-cross pattern and a porcelain version of Zellige tile for the shower walls. Wall-mounted toilets helped save space while floating custom white oak vanities, satin brass shower fixtures and wall-mounted faucets added style.

A formerly dark and dreary space is now not only much more functional, but stunning to look at.

For the guest bedroom, affectionately christened "Butterfly Lane" by the family, we removed dated built-ins, added new carpet and millwork, coated the walls with fresh paint and installed new furniture including the fun rattan chair that hangs from the beamed ceiling just beckoning someone to sit and swing.
