Wedgwood Cape

Renovation of this 1940 house in the Wedgwood neighborhood of Seattle was intended to enhance its "Cape Cod" character. Hip roofs were extended into full gables. Corner and rake boards were let-into the siding to frame each wall and accentuate vertical proportions. Doors and windows were replaced in (mostly) the existing openings Portico above entry and picket fence were added. Composition roofing was replaced with the original roofing material, red cedar shingles, and a crisp white barn ridge was added to vent attic.

When the huge green ash (seen in earlier photos) collapsed it was replaced with three new maples. The cedar fence with semi-transparent white stain could not hold up to Seattle's long wet winters. It was sanded and repainted with two coats of Cabot's solid body white stain.

Entry is through a fenced door yard, typical of many Cape Cod designs. On the windy Cape, picket fences held back drifts of blowing sand. Here, the fence simply defines a small and manageable garden.

Brick chimney was painted white, except for a new sloped shelf and cap. Finial seen at ridge is for barn ridge vent. White corner and rake boards are net 1.5" x 5", let-into the cedar siding to "frame" each wall. The detail makes the house seem more vertical and upright.

New 36" high clear red cedar fence and posts are a custom design. The wood was so beautiful we couldn't paint it. We pre-stained each piece with one coat of Cabot's oil base "white" semi-transparent stain. Corner posts are 1 x 8 cedar over a 4 x 4 post. Caps are one-piece and peaked to drain.
New picket fence and gates
New 36" picket fence has built-up posts at gates and corners. It is clear red cedar. Originally in a semi-transparent stain, as seen here, after four years it had to be sanded-down and repainted with two coats of Cabot's solid body stain.

New gates at sidewalk have latch set and strap hinges. Pickets are 36" high and 2.75" wide, made by ripping a 1 x 6 in half. Spacing between pickets is generally 2.75".
Entry gate
Red cedar corner posts have overhanging caps peaked to shed water. Original semi-transparent stain, seen here, could not hold up to the weather and was repainted with a solid body stain.

Sash were replaced within existing frames except new double hung windows at far left which replaced a wrap-around corner window. Street trees in foreground are crape myrtle.

Red cedar shingle roof has a barn ridge with globe finials. Large green ash at the left in photo provided wonderful summer shade. It was about 70 years old when it started collapsing in huge sections and had to be taken down.

Ridges were extended in front and at sides to create gables, typical of the Cape Cod style. Contrast this with "before" picture. Cedar siding was extended into the new gable ends, so everything looks original.
