Wilmette Addition
This project was an addition and renovation that was made available when the owner purchased the adjacent lot. To make the original house's scale more in line with the larger property, but without significantly increasing the actual size of the house, the front porch was rebuilt and wrapped around the side to meet up with the octagonal family room addition. An colonnaded pavilion became the pivot point to turn the corner.
In the yard, a two car garage was aligned with an angled section of octagon. Instead of looking out towards the garage, the facade facing the family room was made to look like a small outbuilding. A trellis provides depth to the view, and the entire design is tied together with the significant landscaping design. Access to the building is across a small pond, complete with stone steps spaced to allow the water to flow around them.
At the interior, the layout was changed to accommodate the octagonal family room. A large fish tank is set between the original sitting area and the new family room, giving views into each space.
