This postage stamp-sized backyard went from drab to fab with a complete redesign and makeover. Before the redesign, the homeowner didn’t spend much time in her yard because it was dark, cold and uninviting. I remedied that by creating low stone walls of varying heights around the perimeter for visual interest. The tumbled stone gives the walls a softness and warmth that this space was lacking. To brighten the yard even more, we chose a light-colored tile flooring. The diamond pattern and clean lines of the tile make a seamless transition from inside the home to the outdoor space. The fountain is the only existing element from the old yard, but I was able to give it the attention it deserves as the yard’s focal point. The soothing sounds of falling water give the space a spa-like atmosphere. Plants of different textures and colors were used to soften the hardscape even more; the variety of foliage pleases the eye without overwhelming the senses in this small space.
