Elegantly Casual Kitchen

There was a supporting wall that blocked off the kitchen from the rest of the home and the family room had a sunken floor - dangerous to step down and outdated. The hall ways into the rooms had archways and the bar off of the dining room felt like an after thought. We raised the family room floor and removed the supporting wall and opened the bar area into the rest of the space which included adding a new exterior door to the backyard.
The result? Creating a GRAND style this home so badly needed in this luxury neighborhood.

Now one can see into the kitchen from the dining room because we removed the wall in the kitchen that had the supporting post.

Creating modern look with stone

This view shows a stone clad post that was structural and was hidden behind a wall that housed additional cabinets for the kitchen. The wall had blocked the view of the den along with the dining room and the bar. By removing the wall the Clients gained a GRAND great room.

This shows the new fireplace wall. The Client wrapped the chiseled stone around the whole wall because there was not a best place to end the stone. Taking to the ceiling and wrapping it around both walls helps to make this space GRAND. The linear open fireplace provides the Glam when lit.

The old kitchen that could not fit a 48" range

Just another view. Notice the ceiling lights...not enough to light the area behind the existing island...which had an odd shape. Client did not like that seating and could not fit chairs around the island.

Uniformed built in storage helps to declutter this space. Chiseled marble flooring provides the durability needed for a mudroom floor.

Chiseled Stone Design Ideas

The old laundry area...the W/D was positioned in front of these windows. We replaced these windows with French doors out to a new patio where the Clients now enjoy their morning coffee. The W/D went upstairs.

There were two entrances to get into the bar area. One from the hallway and one from the dining room. This is the entrance from the hallway. All those arches had to go!

This was the entrance into the bar area. The door on the left was storage. We opened this up which provided room to add an exterior door to the back yard - providing extra light into the bar area and the dining room.

This image shows the archways and how the bar was hidden behind the wall just off of the dining room. This is the view when one enters the home.

This view shows the white pantry door to the far right. This is where the walk in pantry was, and the fridge was to the left of that along with the microwave. Too many activities crammed into one area of the kitchen. The pantry closet was removed to allow for more cabinetry and counter space.

This view shows the wall in the hallway on the left of which the bar was behind that wall. We opened that up so that the bar and dining area were part of the great room.

This is the view of the wall that we removed. Housed in this wall was a supporting post. The sunken flooring was raised to prevent a trip hazard in addition to allowing the Clients to install one continuous flooring throughout the whole space.

This was the wall that had the support post, we removed the wall and installed stone around the support post that we could not remove. The image on the far right is part of the old bar area.

Great Room Design Ideas

Because of the high ceilings - cabinets with trim went to the ceiling. This space would have looked very cheap, had the cabinets been shorter in height.

The bar is now open to accommodate more seating because we removed a wall and added another way to connect the dining room to the family den room.

Stone Walls for Bar Area

The background room shows the new doors that were added to the mudroom so that the Client can enjoy their coffee on the north side of the home. There was a large picture window in that space and the W/D were positioned in front of that window.

The detail on the glass doors provides an elegant style to the cabinetry.

This shows the new hallway into the den room because we added a door to the back yard. Now guests can easily access the back yard from the dinning room.

Dining Room Ideas

At times, cladding too many walls with the same material can be a bit too much...but mixing polished with chisel stone adds enough texture change that the look absolutely works well together.

Stone Wall Ideas

The grand entrance. By inlaying marble mosaic tile into the wood floor added a nice detail that compliments the stone walls that leads one into the dining area and great room.

The old space had a wall with a mirror right of the bar. We were able to open that wall because there was storage behind that wall which was accessible from the back yard. We replaced those doors with glass doors, removed the walls which added more natural light that floods the den, the bar area...

As one turns the corner to enter the great room, they now can see into the kitchen and by keeping the floor all one level the rooms flow together making for a wonderful great room.

How To Unify Large Spaces

In this before picture one can see how there were two ways to get into the bar area. The cabinets in the background were against the back exterior wall that we replaced with an exterior door to the back yard.

In the back ground one can see a post clad with stone. That is a support post that could not be moved. That post had been hidden inside a wall that blocked the kitchen view from the entry. I suggested to the Client that we clad the post with the same material they planned on using for the stone...
