The opening on the left was where the dining room originally was. We relocated the dining room and opened this space up. In doing that, we added a fireplace and turned this dining room/living room area into a large family room.

Tiling around a window

The bump out left of the oven cabinet was a supporting wall. We reduced the depth as much as possible. I did not want to clad it with just drywall...or it would have called attention to itself. I decided to continue the stone around the wall

Unique wood hood design

This wall was a wall of windows with a deep sill. We remove the windows gained more space in the kitchen and replace old windows with just two windows on this side to provide venting on an exterior wall. We hade to reshape the soffits that covered the beam we needed to work around.

We replaced the old pantry closet with a deep tall cabinet that housed pull out shelves. We added another wall and base cabinet at the end, providing an entertaining area serving the new location of the dining room. New family room location now seen from the kitchen

This space by the window was the location for the original dining area which had walls on 3 sides.

This room originally was the family room, and was the only room with a fireplace. We moved the dining room here.

We had a challenge with part of the vent chase had to be in front of the beam. We clad that with bead board that became the design element for the hood.

Island Designs

This soffit was a beam that could not be moved or recessed into the ceiling. We decided not to clad the soffit with stone...and we changed the soffit depth as it crossed over the tall oven cabinet. One window was kept on this wall to bring in the natural light

From this view, one can now look straight into the family room - the windows in that room brings natural light into the kitchen

This old furniture was replaced with new cabinetry to match the kitchen cabinets.

This is where the dining room was, walled off from the kitchen and taking up space from the living room. The dining room was relocated and the living room was expanded and turned into a family room, especially after adding a fireplace in this expanded space

We removed the bump out windows and rebuilt the wall to to accommodate the new windows. The window sills were too deep and there were too many windows.

In this picture the supporting wall is at the far right of the soffit. We had to worked with this wall and the soffits. Putting the oven cabinet right of the supporting wall and rebuilding the soffit over the tall oven cabinet made it look like it was designed that way from the beginning

This view shows the supporting wall we could not remove. The soffit above was a beam, we could not move that. So we designed around the beam. Positioning the oven cabinet on the right side of the supporting wall allowed us to rework the soffit space more efficiently
