Fresh Tradition in White and Blue
In a historical La Jolla home by acclaimed architect Thomas Shepherd, the kitchen was transformed to enhance family life while honoring the essential character of the original home. A couple with a close and active family life who enjoy welcoming their children and grandchildren into their home needed a substantial update to their existing kitchen. Their 1939 Colonial-style home was designed by Thomas Shepherd, well known for his work in La Jolla. It was important to our clients to respect the original nature of their home while significantly increasing storage, improving navigation, and creating a stylish kitchen and breakfast nook with a more spacious feeling.
The new design honors the home’s traditional sensibility with a modern approach. To create a more open and unified space, existing beams were pushed up for a higher ceiling and upper cabinetry blocking the view from the kitchen to the breakfast nook was removed. Custom cabinetry in crisp white provides abundant organized storage. A deep navy blue walnut cabinet with intricate detailing conceals the refrigerator and side pantries while establishing an impressive focal point. A marble backsplash and inset mosaic tiles above the cooktop wrap the room in luxurious detail. Clear globe lights above the island shed a contemporary light on the surroundings, balanced by a traditional chandelier in the breakfast nook. Fresh and inviting, this kitchen now brings ease, comfort, and liveliness to every family gathering.
