A couple with two children, a passion for Mid-Century Modern collectibles, and an inheritance of beautiful antique pieces wanted their 100-year old Spanish home to better accommodate their personal tastes and active lifestyle. Although their existing home was spacious, it was designed in the confined style typical of its origins. Multiple small rooms in the living space were closed off from each other and difficult to navigate. The homeowners wanted a more open, expansive and modern layout with a fun, relaxed attitude. They also wanted to enhance their home’s connection to a neglected outdoor space.

The new design takes a whimsical approach to achieving a more open and functional space. Pops of bright color balanced with layers of texture and pattern boost visual interest and act as a compelling backdrop for notable Mid-Century Modern collectibles and antiques. A wall was removed between the kitchen and living area, creating an open floor plan that significantly improves the flow of the kitchen and living space, now artfully integrated with a transformed outdoor living area. The home now conveys a serious respect for design and beauty in a lighthearted way that welcomes family and friends into a comfortable, light-filled, artistic environment.
