Mid-Century Modern Rendition

A young professional couple with a strong affinity for Mid-Century Modern design wanted their kitchen to reflect their love for an authentic expression of the style. With two young children and a busy family life, they also needed the space to be organized, functional, and durable. The existing kitchen hadn’t been updated in decades. It was dated and dark, a dull reflection of the 1960s. The clients wanted to respect the original architecture and intention of the space while transforming it to enhance their modern lifestyle.

The cabinetry in the new design stands out for its bold juxtaposition of three colors and textures. Thermofoil cabinetry in two shades of rich brown, one resembling zebra wood and one walnut, is balanced with high gloss white cabinetry that resembles the metal cabinetry popular during the 1960s, updated for modern living with bi-fold lift doors. A bold orange wall brings a jolt of energy to the space. A distinctive vintage 1960s pendant light adds character and illumination. The kitchen connects to a new laundry room and storage space with a walk-in pantry. The flooring is terrazzo, a hallmark of midcentury design. This striking kitchen is now an energetic rendition of a Mid-Century classic, bringing the space to life with new color, texture, and balance.
