Modern Blue Kitchen
This bold kitchen delights the eye with vivid blue details and warm wood tones while honoring the vision of the notable local architect who built the original home in 1952. The homeowners are a professional couple, empty nesters looking to bring fresh vitality and functionality to their environment. Inspired by imaginative design, the clients were clear about their desire to make a visual statement, not just get a kitchen “make-over.”
The existing home was designed by architect Loch Crane. When our clients fell in love with and bought their home in 1992, they were aware of its unique history and felt a deep respect for Loch Crane’s work. The challenge was that the original kitchen was dated, dark and difficult to maneuver in, particularly when entertaining large groups. The homeowners wanted to update their kitchen with modern design and efficiency while respecting the integrity of the home’s character. The kitchen is the first room visitors see upon entering the home and its visual appeal is essential to one’s experience and memory of a visit. The clients love to entertain and often have overnight guests. The home’s location in a coastal community near the San Diego Yacht club and the husband’s boating hobby inspired a nautical spirit and an open, light-filled layout in the kitchen design.
