Highway 620 Residence
Designed on a rocky bluff high above Lake Travis (outside of Austin) for a successful executive in the computer industry and his university professor wife.
The client demanded an extremely weather resistant exterior as well as careful attention to energy conservation. All of the ornamental and structural steel was trucked 90 miles away from San Antonio to be hot-dipped galvanized. The narrow site and western orientation posed a particular challenge. Hence the plan follows along the contour of the limestone cliff, with a large trellis along the rear to shade the lake view windows from the hot Texas afternoon sun. The house perches on the edge of a one hundred foot cliff. Direct lake access is provided by a 200' foot tram that disembarks from the deck of a negative edge lap pool built to hang off the cliff's edge.
The house is one of the few homes in the state of Texas that utilizes four-sided, smooth-cut, rough faced, native Texas limestone and granite on its exterior. Also included are ornamental iron work, teak interior trim, and two color custom MARVIN wood windows. Unique energy efficiency features include a ventilated radiant barrier standing seam metal roof system, "Southern Low E" glazing, and a sophisticated HVAC system that employs a central boiler and cooling tower for hydronic heating and extremely efficient (18.0+ SEER) air-conditioning.
