The Glen Lake House

The "Glen Lake" house represents the life-long penchant of a professional couple for wind-generated recreational activities. The fancy of flight and movement were key elements of the design challenge. The floor plan is inspired by the shape of a bird—curved walls representing wings swooping one through the home. Of course, the site presented inspiration as well as obstacles. Breathtaking views of Lake Austin winding through the hill country were also in the same direction of the hot afternoon sun. Strong prevailing breezes were amplified by the precipitous drop down to the cool waters below. Hence the extensive use of a shading trellis, awnings, covered and screened porches to allow one to enjoy natures gifts while being protected from her harsher side.

"Green" principles abound beyond the use of careful site planning and orientation. Energy efficiency features include careful window placement and overhang sizing, a ventilated radiant barrier metal roof system, a central stair tower designed to enhance the flow of natural ventilation by creating an internal thermal siphon, a hydronic heating system, and a water tower enhanced cooling system that works better the hotter it gets outside! "Green" building materials selections include the use of post consumer recycled cardboard for the wall insulation, utilizing locally quarried stone and other cladding materials that are light in color to reduce solar heat gain, along with many other features that demonstrate one can achieve significant environmental compatibility without resorting to unusual building techniques.
