Rainbows End Residence
This home was built to accommodate a very active family with an outdoor lifestyle that wanted to incorporate passive solar design while focusing in on the historic central Texas theme.
The layout of the house is centered around a large children's playroom which is located above the garage. The master suite is in the wing by itself with a nursery that can later be used as a small office or sitting room. Three well integrated porches, including a large screened in porch, allow for much outdoor living. The porches are arranged around the home's kitchen and main living areas to allow for casual southern entertaining as well as parental observation of children at play.
The homes orientation, window layout, overhang design, and the placement of the stairs make for a house that responds well to the prevailing summer breezes, hot Texas sun, and cold winter winds. The home includes a water-cooled air conditioning system, radiant barrier roof system and other energy efficient features which reduce the utility costs to approximately 50% of similarly sized homes in this area (this has been substantiated with a year's worth of utility bills, which have not exceeded $125.00).
This 3,750 square foot residence evokes the central Texas hill country vernacular by utilizing materials and details that were typical of fine historic homes of the area. To this end, particular emphasis was placed on the block-style limestone rock work, screwed down galvanized metal roofing, half-round galvanized rain gutters, custom milled cedar siding, and exposed rafter and lath construction for all porches and outdoor spaces.
