"Not Everything Is Black and White" Contemporary Interior
The clients for this project came to us wanting to reimagine the heart of their home - the family room, dining area, and kitchen. They wanted to take their kitchen in a modern direction while keeping their existing flooring. Knowing that they wanted to keep their flooring to allocate the budget to other design features, the clients wanted a design that blended their contemporary furnishings with the more traditional tile flooring. The clients also cook daily, so they needed the kitchen to be highly functional as they spend so much time creating meals in that space. They also wanted to update the laundry room located off of the Kitchen to create a space that was both enjoyable to be in and high functioning.
The new space is full of thoughtful details from the finish selections to the hidden storage features the entire kitchen is custom built to meet the needs of the homeowners. One of the homeowners is on the shorter side so it was important to have most of the items used daily stored in the lower cabinets in the cabinetry design. While most daily use items are stored in the lower cabinets we also had to create easy access to the upper cabinets. To do so, we built a hidden step stool storage slot in the island to allow the client to easily grab the step stool and get things from the taller cabinets, then put it back in it's dedicated storage space.
The contemporary black and white design was warmed up through the use of the black walnut accent cabinetry. Glossy black porcelain tiles were selected for the wall-height backsplash because of their ability to bounce light while adding contrast to the room. The glossy black backsplash is contrasted by white flat-panel cabinets and a white Quartz countertop. The dark backsplash pulls out the dark veining in the white Quartz countertop which ties together the black and white design.
Both the Laundry Room and the Living Room were designed to compliment the Kitchen. Through the use of black walnut accents, black and white materials, and contemporary design the three spaces harmonize to create an integrated, entirely new heart of this home.
