VA Accessibility Bathroom Remodel
With a generous grant from the Veterans Administration (VA) our Davis-area clients needed an ADA-compliant bathroom remodel project to accommodate a veteran’s disability.
They turned to MAK Design+Build to transform their roomy, yet poorly configured floorplan into a spacious, purposefully designed main bathroom with accessibility features cleverly disguised as contemporary interior design.
Our design approach married accessibility to sophistication in a modern aesthetic – there’s nothing “institutional” about this intentionally designed bathroom.
Adhering to ADA guidelines, our plans included widening the doorway, and replacing a hinged door with a space-saving pocket door for a newly added water closet. The curbless shower space features a decorative tile backsplash as the shower’s focal point, bench seating, brushed nickel grab bars and shower fixtures that perfectly complement the drawer pulls on the bathroom’s cabinetry.
An expansive marble-topped vanity features dual sinks each topped with industrial-inspired tilting mirrors framed in shiny chrome. The adjustable mirrors allow either a standing or seated person to position it for their best angle. Beneath the vanity, we created a “roll-in” cabinet without a kickboard, and hiding doors to accommodate mobility devices like wheelchairs or riding chairs.
With this much room to work with, we also added a comfortable water closet, large enough to accommodate a mobility device, for additional personal privacy.
