Artistic Winnetka Kitchen

Combine two experienced designers – Gail Drury, President of Drury Design, & Ginny Blasco, Principal of Ginny Blasco Design Studio, Chicago, with an artistic homeowner, an existing cramped kitchen, & lots of room to grow and the possibilities are almost limitless with this kitchen remodel in Winnetka, IL.

The goal: create a transitional look through the use of space planning, design and material selection. The outcome: an elegant and spacious kitchen perfect for everyday living, cooking, gathering, & entertaining.

But, the challenges were many and the wish list was long. There were load bearing walls and ductwork constraints. The homeowner wanted her kitchen full of state of the art appliances, a large walk in pantry, stained glass panels, and a large built in banquette.

While the two islands allow for multiple work zones, aesthetically the lacquered custom-color red island and the dark-stained larger island add a surprising artful effect to the off-white kitchen creating the transitional feel the client was seeking. A hidden pantry door, tactically designed between two 27” Stainless Sub-Zero refrigerators, opens into a spacious walk-in pantry while tile niches above allow for an intriguing eye-catcher.

A sink installed in each island allows for multiple prep zones giving the homeowner the ability to cook and entertain guests simultaneously.

With stained glass windows flanking a 72” hammered zinc custom hood atop a state-of-the-art 48” Wolf Range, a sparkling focal point is created. The mosaic backsplash tile creates visual texture while still keeping the wall light and bright.

A separate breakfast bar housing its own sink, coffee area, refrigerator drawers, & an ice maker was created adjacent to the banquette for ease of use. The unique tile design sets this functional area apart from the rest.

A large banquette centrally located was strategically designed around structural posts to allow for both seating and storage. Open shelving with custom lattice doors was installed on the backside of the banquette to allow for visual interest from the living room.

A slightly more sophisticated, ornate wine bar with leg turnings and glass doors adds a more traditional feel to the transitionally themed kitchen.

By using the same colored cabinetry along the entire perimeter of the open space a sense of unity is created. The larger of the two islands, made from espresso-stained lyptus wood, creates a contrast to the adjacent red lacquer island and adds more interest and sophistication to the kitchen design...

Refrigerator drawers with cabinet panels allow for a symmetrical and aesthetically pleasing design to accommodate a necessary refrigeration station in the breakfast bar. Sleek hardware pulls compliment the straight lines of the cabinetry as well as the minimalistic décor of the space.

Two-sided access doors allow a visual pass-through into the dining room as well as light to stream in from the foyer allowing the glassware to shimmer. The mullions in the glass create the elegance associate with a wine bar.
