Manchester, Stained Maple Kitchen

The home's original kitchen had a dangerous layout with the range right in a main traffic lane, insufficient counter space, and dark, heavy cabinets that dimmed the room drastically despite the double windows. Our designer assisted the homeowners in choosing maple cabinets in a warm caramel stain that will stand up to a busy family and not show nicks and dings as readily as paint, and tweaked the layout for increased safety and efficiency. Durable granite countertops replaced worn laminate and a creamy paint color brightened the room.

The range used to be crammed into the short leg of the L at the left side of this picture, although it is very dangerous to have the range next to a doorway. Our designer moved it to the opposite end of the L for safety and better function with a landing space on each side.

Our designer moved the dishwasher to the left side of the sink to facilitate better storage between the sink and the range - had she left it in its original location to the right of the sink, there would have only been room for a tiny cabinet between the dishwasher and the range.

The homeowners wanted to use their existing refrigerator because it still worked well, but it is somewhat shorter than most new refrigerators so our designer left plenty of space between refrigerator and cabinet for when the time comes to replace the refrigerator.

Equipping lower cabinets with rollout shelves means you don't have to get down on your hands and knees to reach into the back of the cabinet.

Lazy Susans increase the functionality of corner cabinets, keeping items from getting lost at the back. Modern lazy Susans are mounted to stationary shelves instead of the old wobbly pole, so they can handle more weight.

The homeowners requested one cabinet specifically to store their large collection of baking sheets, so we eliminated the shelf and added metal dividers to keep everything neat.

It is extremely unsafe to have a range next to a doorway and the freestanding microwave ate up precious countertop real estate, so an overhaul of the layout was necessary. Double windows did little to brighten up the dark, heavy cabinetry, and the sheet-vinyl floor had definitely seen better days....
