Manchester, Transitional Gray and White Kitchen

From the first meeting with this family, it was apparent what they needed from their new kitchen: more light, more seating, more storage, and room to breathe with an open concept. Removing one wall and doing some minor rearrangement to the perimeter layout made all that possible. Fabuwood cabinets in Galaxy Frost (perimeter) and Galaxy Nickel (peninsula) bring the kitchen up to date with their clean Shaker lines, accented with Amerock Revitalize hardware (our most popular model) in brushed nickel which parallels the stainless steel appliances. Pale blue backsplash tiles bring a pop of color and complement the warm brown flooring that grounds the space.

Fabuwood Galaxy Frost cabinets have a classic Shaker style that fits almost anywhere. Having the cabinets go all the way to the ceiling closes in the gap that collects greasy dust, and the kitchen looks much more finished with two-step crown molding.

Here is a better picture of the blue backsplash tile. The LG Viatera Rococo quartz countertops have some bluish tints to the gray veining that complements the blue backsplash. Blue is also a complementary color with brown, enriching the warmth of the flooring.

This peninsula sits where the wall used to be, providing storage, seating, and prep space for cooking and baking projects. The kitchen is so much brighter without the wall. The remaining bit of wall is load bearing, supporting the second floor.

The homeowners would have had to choose a much smaller sink to have the dishwasher next to it. In order to have their spacious 32" Kohler Strive sink, the dishwasher had to move around the corner. The cabinet to the right of the sink boasts a double trash pullout.

Tall pantry cabinets, each with four roll-out trays in the lower section, surround the refrigerator, providing far more storage than the previous base and wall cabinets. The refrigerator looks much more built-in with the surrounding cabinetry.

The new peninsula can seat up to six people in a comfortable face-to-face configuration. The peninsula cabinets are in Fabuwood's Nickel finish, a subtle contrast to the Frost perimeter cabinets.

You can see how dark the kitchen was with that wall blocking the natural light. The cabinets to the left of the refrigerator were lost in a no-man's-land, separated from the main kitchen. NKBA guidelines state that a tall obstacle like a refrigerator should never interrupt a length of countertop...

This is the wall that had to go to give the kitchen room to breathe. Since it was a load bearing wall, a small section of it had to remain as a post to hold up the second floor, so the new island is really a peninsula.
