Sloped Backyard Reimagined

After nearly two years in permitting due to the critical slopes in this backyard, we were able to bring our clients wishes to life. Their existing deck was small and not easily usable, and the remainder of the backyard was mostly steep slopes.

Our homeowner wanted to add a DADU (detached additional dwelling unit) into their backyard as well as to create more functional and usable outdoor living areas - including a covered space with heaters.

The design of these spaces hinged on leaving a large retaining wall mostly in place. You can see it running under the deck and integrating with the new water feature. The slope was perfect for integration of a waterfall which also forms the backbone of the landscaping.

The two-tiered deck allows outdoor dining and cooking adjacent to the kitchen and creates a covered space for comfortable furniture around a propane fire pit. The heat from the firepit is supplemented by Infratech slimline heaters which allow for nearly year-round use of the space.

Low voltage lighting creates a warm ambiance at night and sets off the waterfall views from the house, deck and yard.

Plants were selected to frame the structure and nestle it into the landscape. As they continue to grow, the backyard will become a habitat for birds, bees and butterflies.

Thanks to William Wright Photography for these images of the project.
