This expansive backyard was once completely taken over by a tennis court and swimming pool. The pool had been raised and its concrete walls were intact, so we designed a patio space within the walls for entertaining.

Our clients had a Japanese garden aesthetic, so we meticulously designed a quartzite river that runs through a field of 2x2 concrete slab pavers to lead the eye to some of the special features including a gigantic, climbable boulder and a mature Japanese maple. The patio was designed to create planting beds to soften its edges.

Holes were cut into the walls to create steps up to the upper level and down to the new lawn. A corten fire pit was plumbed in for ambience and year-round enjoyment of the space.
