1888 Bank Barn Restoration
The diminutive 18th century Pyle House (to the right) and 1888 bank barn are the backdrop for artist Clayton and Starr Bright’s home and sculpture studio. The challenge was linking the two buildings as a vibrant mix of old and new architecture that was neither disrespectful of, nor slavish to, the earlier buildings. Rather than building a new in the middle of the site, permission was granted to remain very close to the road, leaving the valley untouched. As a result, to the north the house is closed to the busy road with tall garden walls and attention to acoustic control details while to the south it is dramatically opened to views and light. The contrast of old and new forms, materials and details reveals the history of the farm and the owners’ passion for sculptural expression
