Inspired by the combination of traditional 19th century farmhouses of the region and the craftsman style of the early 20th century, this 7,000 square foot home was designed to fit comfortably and naturally on a 1.5 acre wooded site near Philadelphia, PA. The 1st Floor separates the more formal living areas to one side and the less formal to the other with carefully placed opening to join the two. The 2nd floor contains the master suite, 3 bedrooms, baths and an exercise room.

The primary aspiration of the design was to create a home that would be welcoming to everyone who enters. Material selection, detail and proportion were combined with a plan that is open yet maintains the individuality of spaces that flow both within the house and to the outdoors.

Long before meeting Archer & Buchanan, the owners of this house had a vision of creating a home with elements of the homes in which they had grown up. One was from ‘Canary Cottage’ in Ohio and the other from a classic R. Brognard Okie home. The inspiration of Okie permeates this new house, from wide-board details, salvaged cabinet doors, and beadboard walls to the inglenook that invites one to light a fire and curl up with a book. Inspired by the traditional Pennsylvania farmhouse on the outside, the inside is a series of special spaces for living, with comfort and gathering as the key elements. The open plan provides a visual connection from the den to the kitchen to the living room, and is articulated by the scale of spaces and the warmth of materials and furnishings. Located on a beautiful wooded site, the seasonal porch brings nature in to this alluring country retreat.
