Aging-in-Place: a Generational Suite Addition

An in-law suite addition proves to be the perfect fit for this multi-generational family. The addition functions as the primary residence for mom and is outfitted with many accessible features allowing her to maintain her independence over the years. The project earned the team of Custom Craft Contractors and JFA Architecture a local Contractor of the Year (CotY) Award and National Universal Design Recognition for a residential addition in the $250,000 and up category.

The suite includes an open-concept dining and living room area.
Sitting Room
The sink and range were positioned with ample landing zones on both sides of the appliance for improved function. Deep cabinet pulls were used on the cabinetry doors and drawers for easy access.
Kitchen
The bump-out bay window in the bedroom floods the room with natural light and provides a cozy nook, ideal for enjoying a morning coffee and newspaper.

Since the bedroom required the most privacy, it was positioned at the rear of the addition to provide adequate separation from the main house.

The sitting room features a traditional, custom built-in bookshelf cabinet to house the TV and other decorative items. The corner unit maximizes use of available floor space while providing visual interest to the room.

The bathroom floor was framed 2” below first floor height to allow for a zero-threshold transition into the space. The stationary shower head on the side wall is perfect for use when standing. The hand-held shower on a slide bar provides flexibility as needs change.

Schluter®-KERDI and Schluter®-DITRA water proofing membranes were applied over the entire bathroom floor to create a barrier-free environment throughout the room.

A small workstation was combined with a tall pantry cabinet for day-to-day paperwork and bill-paying.

This bedroom is off of the second floor addition.

Additional bedroom space was constructed over the first floor addition. The existing bedroom was converted to include a homework desk and sitting area.
