Middles cliff House
New owners of this family home built in late 1990 lacked not only more space, but mainly spacial openness and interconnection with its cliff garden and Atlantic ocean beyond.
Working with an existing reinforced concrete structure is challenging and very limiting , especially in location with seismic activity; but working with an experienced and creative structural engineer helped us save majority of the existing structural frame and build over to provide higher ceilings for clerestory windows below new floating roof slabs. Ocean-facing facades were designed with large sliding systems that can resist hurricanes and open the house to more light and full ocean views. The resulting open layout not only visually connected the entrance area with the ocean side so one can feel drawn inside while entering; but also provided abundance of soft north light and controlled southern sunlight. New Roofs were sloped towards the south to provide exposure for solar panels feeding the new residence. Subterranean cistern located below the new house addition will serve as an ample water reservoir,
