Avec 3 enfants grandissant, la famille qui habitait ce cottage (anciennement un duplex) commençait à se sentir à l’étroit. Le nouvel ajout, combiné à un réaménagement intérieur, permet désormais à la famille de profiter d’un espace de vie renouvelé. Un vaste vestibule, comprenant divers rangements et un large banc intégré, mène à un espace de vie lumineux et généreux orienté vers la cour arrière plutôt que sur la rue. Au passage entre le vestibule et le salon, un accès au bureau de la cliente permet de dissocier l’espace travail (incluant la 2e salle-de-bain) du reste de la maison. Une grande porte patio orientée au sud-ouest permet à la salle à manger, au salon et à la cuisine de bénéficier d’une superbe vue sur le jardin et d’un apport majeur de lumière naturelle. L’escalier intérieur est surplombé d’un puits de lumière qui met en valeur la brique et le mur de moellon de la maison originale, exposés sur toute la hauteur de l’ouverture. Cet escalier est flanqué, au RDC, d’un petit bureau en alcôve construit avec des planches de madrier récupérées de la maison existante. À l’étage, les quatre chambres sont aménagées autour d’un grand espace ouvert qui donne aussi accès à la salle de bain existante, à la nouvelle salle de lavage et à des espaces de rangement. Le toit en mansarde de l’ajout a permis d’éviter l’ajout d’un bassin de toit au toit original, et donne une allure moderne et originale à la façade arrière.

With 3 growing children, the family living in this former duplex was beginning to feel cramped. The new addition, combined with a complete interior re-design, allows the family to enjoy a renewed and refreshed living space. A large vestibule, with abundant storage space and a long built-in bench, leads to a spacious and generous living space oriented towards the backyard. In the hallway leading from the vestibule to the living room, an access to the client’s office separates the working space (including a 2nd bathroom) from the rest of the house. A large patio door on the south-west facade offers the dining room, living room and kitchen a superb view into the garden and lots of natural light. A skylight above the interior staircase enlivens the brick and stone of the original house walls, exposed on the full height of the house. Next to the staircase, a small alcove office was built using restored wood from the original house. On the top floor, the 4 bedrooms are organized around a large open space and connected to the existing washroom, to a new laundry room and to storage spaces. The mansard roof of the addition gives a modern and original touch to the garden faced and avoids the need to provide a new roof basin to the existing roof.
