Le projet consiste en l’ajout d’un deuxième étage sur une petite maison de 1 niveau mesurant 25’ par 28’ et située en fond de lot, à 60’ du trottoir. L’aménagement des espaces intérieurs et extérieurs est déterminé par la position reculée de la maison sur le terrain. Le rez-de-chaussée devient un grand espace traversant qui s’ouvre sur une terrasse et un grand jardin situé en cour avant. L’espace de la cour avant est, à son tour, séparé du trottoir par un muret reprenant la matérialité de la façade. L’esthétique de la façade exprime l’organisation et les fonctions des niveaux par l’alternance entre ses surfaces opaques et ses ouvertures. Ce rythme très sobre et régulier est modulé par l’utilisation de matériaux contrastants tels qu'un parement de maçonnerie foncé et de l’acier galvanisé très clair. Les interventions sur la maison améliorent l’efficacité énergétique du bâtiment par la réalisation de travaux d’isolation des murs existants et l’intégration d’un système de récupération de chaleur, en plus de la conception d’un espace traversant pour une ventilation naturelle durant les saisons plus chaudes, et la mise en place d’un brise-soleil contrôlant les gains thermiques de façon passive.

This project consists of the addition of a second floor to a small house built on one level measuring 25' by 28' and set at the back of its lot, 60' back from the sidewalk. The layout of the interior and exterior spaces was determined by the house's location on its lot. The ground floor has become a large living area extending from front to back, opening onto a large terrace and garden in the front. The front garden is separated from the sidewalk by a garden wall built using the same materials as the façade. The front façade expresses the organization and functions of the floor levels behind it, alternating between solid and transparent surfaces. Its regular and ordered rhythm is modulated by the use of contrasting materials including dark masonry cladding and clear galvanized steel. The renovations completed on the existing house improve its energy efficiency, improving the insulation of the existing exterior walls and integrating a heat recovery ventilator, and by creating a space open from one end to the other for cross-ventilation during the warm months and the installation of a sunscreen to control solar heat gain through passive solar means.
