HOP! est la rénovation complète d’une maison unifamiliale de type Shoebox située dans le quartier Mile-Ex à Montréal. En recherche d’espace supplémentaire, la famille occupante a mandaté Studio MMA pour ajouter une chambre et agrandir leurs espaces de vie.
L’intervention sur la maison existante s’est fait avec un esprit de valorisation de cette typologie particulière à Montréal. Des travaux de restauration de la façade ont permis de retirer la fausse-mansarde, un élément non originel de la façade, et d’y construire un nouveau couronnement plus approprié pour cette typologie. En profitant de la généreuse hauteur de la maison, le plancher du rez-de-chaussée a été surélevé partiellement afin d’augmenter la hauteur libre au sous-sol. L’avant de la maison, où se trouve le vestibule d’entrée et un bureau, reste au niveau du rez-de-chaussée existant.
Le nouvel étage a été scindé en deux et modelé afin de créer à l’avant un toit terrasse et un porte-à-faux à l’arrière. De cette manière, l’étage qui a été ajouté à la maison vient s’encastrer dans le volume existant de la Shoebox et se positionne en retrait par rapport à celle-ci en deux sections. La façade existante a donc conservée son importance en terme de proportion sur la façade avant du projet. Ce geste, combiné à un choix de matériaux contrastant avec la maçonnerie de la maison existante, permet de bien distinguer le nouvel ajout de la maison d’origine.
L’aménagement intérieur offre de grands espaces ouvertes articulés autour de l’escalier menant à l’étage. Celui-ci joue le rôle d’un énorme puits de lumière dans la maison par les fenestration abondante en façade avant. Les espaces de vie au rez-de-chaussée s’ouvrent généreusement sur une terrasse faisant toute la largeur de la cour arrière.

HOP! is the complete renovation, including a one-storey addition, of a single-family home located in the Mile-Ex district of Montreal. Needing additional space, the family mandated Studio MMA to design a project that added a bedroom and increased the main living areas.
The interventions were developed with respect and appreciation of the iconic Montreal ‘shoebox’ typology of the existing house. Restoration work on the facade allowed for the removal of the false mansard, a non-original element, and the reintroduction of a new cornice more representative of this building type. Taking advantage of the generous height of the house, the ground floor was partially raised to increase the headroom in the basement. The front of the house, which includes the vestibule and an office, was kept at the existing level of the ground floor.
The new story was split in two and shaped to create a terrace at the front and an overhang at the back. This integrates the added floor into the existing house volume while setting it back in two sections. This gesture, combined with a strategic choice of materials contrasting with the existing brick, allows the existing house to maintain its dominance on the front façade. The project achieves an intended balance where the addition is clearly distinguished from the original house while engaging in a harmonious dialogue with it.
