Lap of Luxury

While the clients main desire was an open and updated space, the wish list was compelling, from a renovation point of view. More space was needed to fill the desired outcome, but there was nowhere to go. All the necessary plumbing was to be moved. The original family bathroom was pretty roomy, but the layout was so awkward that a toilet served as a focal point. Adding to the complexity, the bathroom renovation was located on the second floor of a completely renovated house!

The original bathtub was hemmed in by walls, and it was a shower bath combo. The bathtub was in an awkward corner, and the overall layout just did not work. The two dormer walls had mirrors on each side, causing an endless reflection; it felt like you were in a funhouse. There was only one small vanity, storage was shallow and poorly placed, and when you walked into the room, the toilet was the first thing you saw, as well as a 1940 hand dryer placed too high on the wall.

The wish-list;

The need for a freestanding soaker tub, large shower, double vanity, hide the toilet, remove the hand dryer and create an open and airy feel with some luxury. It was a tall order, and extra space would have to come from somewhere to make everything fit in.

The solutions;

A wet room layout would be a good and practical way to incorporate the open feel. We opened up the wall beside the bathtub enclosure and extended the bathroom into the attic space. Now a freestanding tub could be tucked under the dormer for a command performance. Building in a decorative arched nook as a feature facing the bathroom door created a great focal when you enter the room, and mirrored the shape of the dormer window. Building in a full-length niche next to the shower to keep easy day items shampoo bottles and soap out of sight was a luxury feature amount many. We moved the toilet, creating space for a larger, floating double vanity. Tiles halfway up the wall added to the luxury and drama the client craved for.

At the end of the renovation, we have created a bathroom with depth, warmth and the luxe feeling the clients craved. And when it was finished, they wanted to look and use the space at it as much as possible.
