After taking ownership of this Scarbrough home in Wexford, the first thing our client wanted to do was transport it from the 1970s and into 2017. Ultimately, she wanted to a kitchen that would be modern, assertive and practical. She also wanted to open the kitchen up to the rest of the space, which was originally completely walled off from the dining and living rooms. This would be the most straightforward and easy thing to accomplish; all that had to be done was remove the wall between the dining room and kitchen. We also converted a full wall into a partial wall, near the living room couch and front door to allow more natural light into the space.

Making the kitchen more practical required a little more creativity on our end. We decided to keep the wall between the kitchen and living room intact, to create a wrap-around cooktop station, TV and storage unit. This helped to anchor the dining, living and kitchen spaces, and created a kind of roundabout, as the surrounding path is a high traffic area which leads to all the various spaces on the first floor. Open shelves were used on this unit for both ease of use and visual interest.

The countertop was extended to an L-shape, which has the added benefit of concealing a stairwell box, which was not moveable in any way. Drawer fronts were added to the stairwell box to blend it in with the rest of the millwork. We opted for a mix of European laminate (the lower cabinets and open shelves) and matte black (the upper cabinets and TV units). The “sea birch” laminate cabinets keep the kitchen light and airy, while the black cabinets bring a modern, dramatic touch (as do the matching black stainless steel appliances).
