Backyard Entertaining Around a Big Tree

This new home in Etobicoke is on a large pie-shaped lot including a massive city-protected maple tree. The owners wanted a fully featured backyard for entertaining and relaxation, so the primary elements were placed around the perimeter of the yard, leaving space in the middle for the lawn and tree.
Since the property boarders on the yards of five neighbours, the Betz designers had some interesting challenges. The yard’s cedar privacy fence runs at five odd angles, so unique designs were needed for the pool, pool deck, outdoor kitchen, dining and entertainment area.
Adjacent to the basement walkout, an elevated wood deck features an outdoor living room and breakfast table. The lounge area is sheltered by a retractable umbrella. As the protective surrounding yews mature they will add more privacy for this frequently used area.

The focal point of the pool is a large sheer descent waterfall elevated on a wall of smooth natural black granite to match the pool’s coping. The wall doubles as a diving platform, with a custom underwater swim out bench at the deep end so keen divers can try it over and over.
