This sprawling country property is the leisure retreat of a Toronto family that come here to enjoy the serenity of the wide-open spaces. Being at the top of the Niagara Escarpment, it enjoys panoramic views overlooking Creemore and the surrounding valley.

Betz was asked to design and build a simple modern pool and patio that would be the outdoor focal point. The centrepiece is a 15’ x 30’ Gunite pool surrounded by a unique patio made up of 53 poured concrete slabs interspersed with rows of natural turf.

The pool’s shallow end is highlighted by a 7’ x 7’ overflow spa and a 7’ x 7’ pool entry tanning shelf. It is ringed by Upper Algonquin stone coping and a narrow border of matching flagstone which runs the full length along two sides.

The pool features a premium dark grey exposed aggregate Pebble Tec interior finish which gives it a pond look. An ultimate luxury is the automatic pool cover which retracts into a bunker in the deep end. It not only cuts back on pool cleaning chores but also reduces chemical use and heating costs.

This pool is capable of setting two distinctive moods, one of drama and excitement with the four deck jets sending high arcing streams of water into the pool, and the other is one of total tranquility with the surface of the water looking like a sheet of glass (see next photo).

This photo shows the pool’s placid surface creating a mirror reflection of the images beyond. The ambient light from the home casts a warm glow negating the need for bright outdoor lighting.

When not in use, the spa softly recirculates water back into the pool creating a glass-like surface. This close up look at the dark grey exposed aggregate Pebble Tec interior reveals the reflections from the tiny seashell fragments which during the day sparkle in the sun.

The outdoor lighting is subtle at night which suits the quiet country location. The light from battery powered LED light bowls is softly diffused as it reflects off the underside of the white umbrellas.

The outdoor lighting array is completed by the subtle ground level uplights at the corners of the concrete patio inserts. This adds a final dramatic touch without disturbing the peaceful quiet of the cornfields which border the expansive yard.

The backyard features include the convenience of a Jandy control system which allows most components to be controlled remotely or from inside the home. The level of the pool lighting can be dimmed as well as set to a single colour or a changing rainbow of colours.

What a beautiful setting for an evening outdoors in the country. On clear evenings the stars overhead will be twinkling and the lights in the valley below will flicker with a calming reassurance that this corner of the country is alive and well.
