Modern Design Brightens Small Backyard

This couple, who bought a home in a new subdivision with small lots, asked Betz to design a low maintenance backyard with a pool. The tight access, change in elevation and restrictive property line setbacks limited the size of the custom vinyl pool to 11’ x 17’.

Considering the size limitations of the pool, instead of having a traditional deep end, Betz built a wedge-shaped bottom with a depth of 3’ at the steps to just over 5’ at the main drain. This gentle slope allows bathers to swim, walk the full length, tread water or jump into the pool.

The pool has a textured light grey vinyl liner which lends the water a soft muted blue tone. To extend the clean modern look, the poured in place concrete ‘deck over’ coping is finished with a smooth straight face.

The pergola is conveniently located beside the home’s backyard walkout. Although the yard is only 25’ x 40’, the lounge area has comfortable seating for nine people. With the pergola roof fully closed the area magically takes on a more intimate feeling.

To help keep the yard low maintenance, a small strip of artificial turf was installed beside the pergola to provide a play area for the owners two small dogs. The modern look is extended with the minimal design of the floating acid washed concrete steps.

The owners were so pleased with the acid washed concrete and artificial turf they invited Betz to create walkways along each side and extend the design to the front of the home. A small artificial turf lawn was installed along with a new modern look entrance porch.

It’s easy to see from the decorating accents that the lady of the home loves to work with bright colours. The pool’s Atom lighting system fits the bill perfectly since it can be set to a single colour or a changing rainbow of vibrant colours.

The pergola’s four rows of LED strip lights, plus the ambient light from the pool, negates the need for additional garden lighting. They help to show off the modern factory painted aluminum fencing which most residents in the subdivision opted to install from the beginning.

As the light begins to fall on warm summer evenings it’s great to open the roof on the pergola and enjoy the slowly unfolding labyrinth of twinkling stars. Being located near the edge of the city allows the star watching to be even better.

The final image for this delightful compact backyard is fittingly a splash of colour. With the light from the pool casting a magenta tone on the fence the owner’s love of colour is attractively expressed with the sparkling golden glow from the crystal balls.
