Balancing the functional and aesthetic desires of this young couple, with a floor plan appropriate for a 1970's brick colonial home in Foxcroft, meant completely redesigning the entire first floor.

The dining room and office were relocated, the kitchen expanded, walls opened enough to improve traffic and sight lines, and a laundry room and mudroom were added. Windows were reconfigured to create a sense of symmetry in the asymmetrical space and to fill the central kitchen space with natural light.

The family room got a makeover when we removed an asymmetrical wall of brick and odd built-ins in favor of a central brick fireplace. Thanks to the removal of dark wood paneling, white German schmear over the red brick fireplace, and a fresh coat of white paint over the former dark beams, the family room now feels bright and spacious.

With functional additions like the new covered entry way over the garage, the laundry and mudroom addition, and a new walk-in pantry, this family has more space to live and grow.
