Shuffling the Deck in Sudbury

The owners of a Sudbury Deck House came to Feinmann seeking to enlarge and update their kitchen. They requested a larger area for the family to gather for meals since they didn't use their dining room which was small and gloomy. Additional counter space for baking and meal prep was another goal. Beyond the existing dining room was a three-season porch with abundant natural light.

Our design team released the space from its dark, "boxy" confines by taking down the wall between the existing dining room and kitchen. The new rectangular shape is now in harmony with the Mid-Century modern aesthetic of the home. The orientation of the appliances and cabinetry are in natural alignment with the linear quality of the kitchen. Another bonus is the additional light from the new porch doorway and a transom window that matches one over the office entry off of the kitchen.

The focal point is the large island that steps down a level to an attached, hand-rubbed piece of mahogany, which serves as an elegant eating area. The island countertop and perimeter counters are gray Honed Pebble by Caesarstone. The cabinetry is Maxima from Composit, made in Italy. The upper cabinets and floating wall across from the range shine in white, glossy lacquer while contrasting with the lower cabinets and island in a bleached oak veneer. The corner cabinets are open shelves, further contributing to the feeling of spaciousness. The backsplash is glass tile, Wave in Breeze, a subtle blue that reminded the client of sea glass. The tile is placed horizontally rather than vertically to evoke a sense of movement, like waves. New stainless appliances and a Wolf range complete the transformation of the kitchen.

An elegant cable railing replaces the clunky pipe rail to enhance the open feeling to the entry and other rooms. A new oak floor was installed that works beautifully with the wood part of the island and the slanted wood ceiling, inherent in Deck Houses.
