Swank & Private Master Bath
The owners of an eclectic-style Lexington home (originating as a simple Colonial) came to Feinmann to reconfigure their upstairs to provide for a new master bath, a reimagined Master Bedroom with walk-in closet and an added family bath. But the house had bigger problems. The front entry, a two-story space featuring a dramatic stairway provided confusing architectural “clues” as to how to get into the home’s primary social space. Typically, the uninitiated guest traversed the grand entry volume only to enter past the laundry space into the middle of the kitchen instead of traveling through the less dramatic space to arrive at the Living Room.
The programmatic requirements provided an opportunity to solve two problems – to gain more floor area for the second floor and to architecturally clarify the main pathway into the heart of the house. This was principally accomplished by filling in some of the 2-story volume with more second floor area which allowed us to create a projecting ceiling with unique wood paneled surface that convincingly “announced” the pathway into the house.
Upstairs, an elegant master bath was created by expanding into the original master bedroom closet space, while the master bedroom itself expanded into the existing bedroom next to it, creating a new, larger walk-in master bedroom closet. That adjacent bedroom benefitted from the enclosure downstairs and shifted closer to the staircase, thus able to remain approximately the same size. Space for the new family bath on the opposite of the hall was taken from the bedroom facing the rear of the house. Its closet shrank in size to make room for a vanity in the new family bath which also includes a large linen closet and a tub/shower combination. The family bath features vanity cabinetry by Siteline™ and a custom designed and built linen cabinet with a touch-open mechanism, painted to match the vanity. The vanity counter top is Bianco Antico granite.
The Master Bathroom features Greenfield cabinetry in Grey Oak, Estridge slab door style with a natural finish. The vanity and shower bench are Delicatus granite. There are double undermount sinks with wall mounted faucets by Graff.
Overall the upstairs upgrade creates a better flow as well as privacy and luxury for the parents.
