Eclectic Style

The original master bedroom of this Highland Hills home was small, cramped and dark. Located at the front of the house, the owner did not have a private place to unwind or enough space for her things. Furthermore, the living, dining and kitchen spaces were compartmentalized and the owner wanted better flow within the house and to open up the view to a revamped outdoor living space and pool.

The new master suite addition was added to the back of the home. An existing bedroom was incorporated to add even more square footage. The new master has large windows and a sliding door to take advantage of the view. A private sitting porch with heaters was built off the bedroom to give the owner a secluded place to enjoy with easy access to the pool.

Directly off the bedroom is the master bath. The client’s goal was to create a new, luxurious bathroom with ample storage. The new bathroom has a roll in Emparador marble shower with a glass block wall that has four see through blocks that create a pee-a-boo window to the outside. The same marble is used for the tub surround of the new under-mount, jetted tub and continues as the counter of the new double vanity. A picture window with a remote control shade allows for natural light to flood the bathroom and travertine floor tile finishes the look. Lastly, connecting off the bathroom is the new walk in closet with all new custom painted wood cabinets, hanging clothes racks, shoe shelves, built in ironing board and carpet.

Further renovations to the home continue into the kitchen, living, dining and outdoor areas. The original front of house had an office, entry and formal dining room. In the new design, walls between these spaces were removed, as well as old upper kitchen cabinets, which were replaced with hanging pendant lights. And, to take advantage of the incredible view from the living room, a new carved travertine fireplace was relocated to an interior wall and a 16 foot sliding glass door was put in its place. Popcorn was scrapped off the ceiling and an existing ridge beam was encased in painted wood trim as well.

The new sliding glass door opens up to a large, renewed outdoor living space and pool area. The original seating area was enclosed in a short brick wall with a narrow stair leading down to the deck and pool. The new space has an open stair to the newly restored pool deck.

While some additions and renovations can be straight forward, adding onto this home had its share of innovative solutions to some difficult obstacles. Due to the location of the home on the property, all the concrete materials had to either be transported by hand to the back of the house or pumped through a line running through the front door and out the sliding glass door in the living room. Other times certain equipment like the Bobcat could not be driven to the appropriate areas because of the terrain, pool and tall foundation.

Even with obstacles, a luxurious new master suite was created and a newly revived home and outdoor space completed. Now the owner can enjoy her home to the fullest.
