Excalibur
This master bath lacked personality and featured a cavernous space in the center of the room. The clients entered directly from the bedroom into the room, to a large expanse of countertops in one corner and tub and shower tucked into another corner. The closet contained a built-in dresser but lacked shelving and sufficient rod space for hanging clothes. The owners wanted to achieve a country club ambience with updated finishes, improved lighting and more storage in the closet.
The original space has been reconfigured and now features a transition area between the bedroom and bath. This hallway contains custom cherry cabinets and a wardrobe in cherry. The new bath features a vaulted ceiling with cove lighting, vanity lights, and puck lights. The room is bright with natural light from a new window in the shower and above the tub. The warm cabinetry contrasts with the glass tile blend in the tub surround and the glass of the shower wall. Natural tile covers the floor and walls of double shower.
The new dressing area, with its vaulted ceiling, is outfitted with spaces for hanging clothes, has shelves overhead, and plenty of storage niches throughout. A bench beneath the new window and a granite topped island dresser, both in cherry, complete the amenities of the room.
Constructing the new window bays required different approaches. To add the bench alcove in the dressing room, new concrete was dowelled into the existing slab, below grade, for additional integrity. To create the bench alcove in the shower and tub bays, new floor joists were sistered onto the existing joists. The new spaces cantilever over the sloped back yard. The original flat ceiling was opened up to the existing attic and polyurethane foam insulation was sprayed into the small space between the framing and roof decking. Not only have the insulated properties of the attic area increased, the rooms below feel larger!
The updated master bath is pleasing to the eye, with its stained wood cabinetry, textured granite countertops, and natural materials. The owners are enjoying the roomy dressing area, and all the storage possibilities!
