Handicapped Acessible Retreat
The owners of this 1990’s home wanted to transform their second story master bath into a handicapped accessible retreat with finishes that were durable and up-to-date. Immediate needs included a roll in shower for two, his and hers vanities-one with room for a wheelchair, and a toilet room with a wider doorway.
In the new layout, although the plumbing remained in the original locations, engineering had to be addressed. In order to meet code, the shower floor needed to drop ½” from the threshold to contain any overflow. To recess the floor and support the new roll in shower, the tops of the trusses were cut. New 16 foot spans of framing, from wall to wall, were sistered in.
A custom quartz tub deck extends seamlessly into the shower as a bench seat. The new frameless glass shower is visually appealing and allows light throughout the room. Along with an overhead shower head, a hand held shower wand was added along with several grab bars.
The new vanities and storage cabinets were crafted out of distressed knotty alder. New tower cabinets were installed and furr downs were added to create a definition of space in the large bath. The floor was finished with ceramic tile and features a decorative medallion in the center of the room. The lighting has been improved with task lights and with scones over the vanities.
The homeowners were anxious for their master bath to meet their wheelchair access needs. They are now enjoying the ease of mobility, the improved lighting, and updated finishes.
