Mirror Symmetry Bath
The new owners of this home, built in the 1990’s, wanted to redo their master bath suite to better suit their needs. Originally, separate his and hers toilet rooms flanked the bathing area, which consisted of a large tub and a small shower. The owners had no need for a tub, but, being on the same work schedule, did want to find a way for both of them to shower at the same time. The existing storage was minimal. One odd item was a toilet mounted on top of a platform-the former owner was very tall.
The existing columned opening to the master bath was enlarged, the columns were removed and now a new cased opening frames the shower. Symmetrical, back to back, twin showers with a large, glass mosaic tile partition between allows simultaneous showering for two. Glass tile throughout the shower sparkles whether during the day or at night when new dimmable recessed lighting illuminates the space. Floor to ceiling ¼” thick glass keeps splashes inside the shower. A pass through niche in the shower let’s the clients share the shampoo. Natural light filters through two new frosted glass floor to ceiling slot windows. Expert craftsmanship throughout is reflected in the meticulous detailing of the mosaic glass tile accented by an oval tile band. Rift-sawn oak cabinets stained a dark coffee brown, stand on either side of the shower providing ample storage.
The toilet rooms were gutted; new plumbing fixtures, in the same locations as the originals and honed black granite countertops were installed. A large scale version of the glass mosaic tile was used for the backsplash which plays off the rough look of the black slate, herringbone patterned floor tiles. The floor was used to visually connect the individual rooms. An extra sink was added in the larger bathroom so both homeowners could enjoy the view while brushing their teeth.
This new bath suite gave the owners not only a bathroom designed to fit their needs, but also a restful, bright bathing area that compliments and enlarges their bedroom.
