Transitional Pushes To Modern
Susan and Don fell in love with Austin’s Zilker neighborhood while they rented a house on Josephine Street; loved it so much that they decided to hang up renting and buy a house there. It wasn’t long in the search until they found a perfect match, an old, untouched home, beloved by its owners, who were just as concerned with finding the right buyers as Susan and Don were in finding the perfect spot. It was a happy match, with only one catch: as the years went by and kids starting entering the picture, more space was needed. Sound familiar? The growing family chose CG&S to renovate and expand the home after seeing a similar project in the Zilker neighborhood featured on the 2013 Austin NARI Tour of Remodeled Homes, owned by friends that helped them in the vetting process.
The design program was straight forward: the classic mid-century staggered floors were retained, while the ridgeline that faced the street was pushed back and raised to create higher ceilings in an addition at the back of the house. The perpendicular ridgeline was also raised to meet this new height, pushing the 3rd tier volume back as well. This new space made room for more bedrooms, a master suite, and back screened-in porches on the third tier; a new kitchen and dining area on the 2nd tier; and new utility, bath, beer station, office, and kids space on the bottom tier.
